Writing Competition, deadline 28th February 2008

In August 2007, we witnessed raging forest fires and a rising death toll. With firefighters battling ferocious fires, the Greek state was declared in a state of an emergency, appealing to other European countries for help.

In an attempt to raise awareness and motivate our students to take action and protect what's left of the Greek forests, EPAFI is organizing a writing competition. All EFL students can take part either in primary, secondary or tertiary level. To enter the competition EFL teachers must submit their students papers before the end of February. The results will be announced in March and the prizes awarded within the next month. The topics you can choose from are:

Α. Make a poster about forest fires. Use pictures and 20-50 words to protest about this environmental destruction.
B. Write a story beginning “It’s on fire! The forest is on fire!” my mum screamed. (120-150 words)
C. Imagine there were no forests. What would life be like without green? (120-150 words)
D. Conduct a survey among your classmates and write a report about how they felt after the fires. (150-180 words)
E. Imagine you are a reporter visiting areas burnt to ashes. Write an account based on what you experienced the few days you lived there. (150-180 words)
F. The European Commission will put forward proposals this autumn for a standing EU force to respond to fires, floods and other major emergencies. The commission says the current system has its limits. In 2007, there has been flooding in the UK, a heat wave in central and southern Europe, and now forest fires in Greece, in which at least 60 people have died. But critics say the EU should release financial aid faster, rather than set up a civil protection force of its own. (BBC News, 27 August 2007)
Write a letter to the Environmental Advisor of the European Commission to suggest ways of tackling environmental disasters such as forest fires. (180-200 words)

We hope you will all participate in this writing competition. It's your turn to take action.Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to email members of the Board.

The deadline for submissions is 28th Friday 2008. Students' projects can be sent to:
